Closed Loop Demonstration Farm: The Loop Farm
5,000 m3 rainwater stored provides for the horticulture, aquaculture and processing.
All used water is recollected and treated for reuse.
Water Availability
Rooftop solar panels providing 250 kWh per day for pumps, filters, grinders, air-conditioning and cold storage.
Energy
2 recirculating fresh water fish ponds of 200 m3. One is cleaned with constructed wetlands and the other by MBBR.
Recirculating Aquaculture
500 m2 hydroponics in a nethouse and in crop ponds: Deep Water Culture , Ebb and Flow, Nutrient Film Technique and Top Dripped pots.
Hydroponics
Facility dedicated to transform resources like fish waste, coconut and water hyacinth into animal feed and fertilizer. Compost, Biochar, Fermentation and BSF.
Resource Transformation
Ever since working for the Professorship Circular Economy at Van Hall Larenstein University of Applied Sciences, Netherlands, Steven Starmans has dreamt to stop talking and start doing. With the establishment of this Closed Loop Demonstration Farm it has become possible.
The objective of the farm is to show local farmers that sustainable practices can still be profitable and, as the word sustainable implies, not just in the short term, but also for next generations.
The reason for the Closed Loop part is to go to the extreme, becoming as much as possible independent from other than locally available natural resources. This approach is not something we advise local farmers to copy, but it will show the opportunities and restraints faster than just tweaking conventional practices. Nonetheless the Loop Farm will stay close to what the farmers are willing to accept and adopt.
